The Futures of Social Work in Health Care

by Richard Woodrow, National Society President
According to Voltaire, “Doubt is not a very agreeable state, but certainty is a ridiculous one.” (Philosopher’s Dictionary). Thinking about the future inevitably pushes us out of comfort zones to areas of doubt, unknown, ambiguity. As we contemplate “The Next Hundred Years,” we need to envision what is possible, not what is predictable. This year’s Annual Conference keynote and full-group workshop focused on envisioning possible scenarios for our future in health care. 2006 Salary Survey Results
From April to June of this year a salary survey was available for completion to members and non members. The survey was initiated at member request in order to benchmark against other social workers who are hospital based and who have similar functions. The scope of this survey focused on hospital based social work but there may be future surveys of other health care social work venues if there is enough interest. The results of the current survey are the broad look at salary and staffing structures from across the country. Additional statistical analysis of this data will be done over the upcoming months to break it down by regions and other types of geographical grouping.
