Highlights of the SSWLHC Meeting and Conference
As the 2009 SSWLHC Conference Chair, I am pleased to share that by all reports the 2009 SSWLHC Conference in New Orleans, LA, April 22-25 was a success. The post conference evaluations reveal a high level of satisfaction with the course content, the variety of educational offerings provided, the quality of the presenters, and the overall sense of inclusiveness that attendees felt at the conference. And of course the location of the conference was a huge hit! These accomplishments were due in large part to the vision and leadership of SSWLHC President Margaret Meyer, who wanted the conference to be of the same high quality as previous conferences especially given the difficult economic times that face many of us in our organizations and in our personal lives. While our attendees' numbers were down primarily due to economic challenges, the majority of those who attended reported that the conference was worth the cost. Great efforts were made to hold down costs at the conference which helped us meet budgeted revenues. One major way we were able to hold down expenses is through the greater use of SSWLHC members as volunteers at the Registration and Information Desk. Many current and former Board members as well as other Society supporters provided hours of service at the desk and for that I am very grateful. And of course our conference planner Trish Keppler and Executive Director Lindsay Groff, from our management firm Fernley and Fernley, provided great service and oversight to the whole event. Without them our jobs as volunteers would be much more difficult.
Check out our photo gallery to get a glimpse of some of the activities in which attendees participated, especially the Volunteer Day with Habitat for Humanity. Many great stories were shared about the experiences of our attendees at that event. Another conference highlight was the new activity of an opening banquet on Wednesday night. While this was a great way to connect with old friends and meet new ones over a delicious meal, we also heard from an inspiring presenter, Dr. Gloria Wilder. She shared stories of hope, commitment, and encouragement. A second guest lecturer, Rick Reamer, a national expert on social work and ethics, gave many examples of ethical issues facing social workers today and his lecture had many of us taking notes about things we needed to work on back at our own places of work.
While some of us are fortunate to attend the annual conference on a regular or semi-regular basis, I am aware that for some this is a rare treat and for other SSWLHC members they are unable to ever attend the conference. While my ability to network through the connections I have made at conference have had a tremendous positive impact on my professional career, the annual conference also is critical to the success of the Society in other ways. The revenue generated at the conference helps us achieve our other goals and supports activities throughout the year. So while only a portion of our members and those new to the Society are able to attend the conference, their support of the conference helps us continue to move forward with the work of the Society. I want to extend a big THANK YOU to those of you who put in many "volunteer" hours to make our annual conference and membership meeting a success. Now let's start thinking ahead to the 2010 Conference!
